Ink Deep is an animated documentary recounting the experiences of Rémy, a transsexual undergoing hormone reassignment therapy to transition from female to male. Playing on the saying “gender is only skin deep”, the film uses the body as a canvas, exploring the subject of sex change, the alienation of transsexuals, and the relation of the individual to his body and the outside world. Using well-known pop culture symbols (♀♂) to familiarize the viewer with the character’s identity, as well as traditionally gender-specific colours (pink and blue), the piece reinforces gender-stereotypes and asks where or how the main character fits into either of these social norms. Visual and sound treatments allow the viewer to participate in the month-long transition in a little over two minutes. The goal of the film is to share lived experiences and facts with a greater public through illustrations, while avoiding direct opinions or social implications of trans-sexuality.
