Simply Rob is the stage name of New York based poet and activist Rob Vassilarakis. Estranged from his family because of his sexuality, Rob fell into the world of drugs. This led to a 15-year addiction and homelessness before Rob turned his life around.
Despite the setbacks in his life, Rob refused to be a victim. When Rob received his diagnosis in 1993, he was told that he only had seven years to live. Nearly two decades later, he is still going strong. He hopes his poetry can inspire and educate others.
In exorcising his personal demons through words, Rob’s poetry has helped him come to terms with his life and HIV status. For Rob, poetry is a way of living: “I write because it is easier to express than it is to feel,” he says.
Using a mixture of HD and Super8, this documentary weaves lyrical imagery with Rob’s illustrative poetry to tell a very personal tale that reflects global issues and prejudices. Simply Rob’s eloquence and honesty allow the viewer a glimpse into one person’s experience of being HIV positive.
