The streets of Berlin are where the animation artist Nikki Schuster searches for litter. Small pieces of waste, carelessly disposed of, without a second thought. They are the matter with which she creates a new world of lively and curiously moving figures. Sporadically chosen streets and urban enclaves are introduced, using frame-by-frame montages in dynamic pans, tiny details of a wall, a plug fixture, a waste container or a graffiti are zoomed into. There they come to life, grow, mutate and make noises, these small garbage-creatures. Shoe-soles, pieces of scrap metal, caps of spray-cans or disposable dental-floss gadgets – each piece of litter finds its purpose. In computer animated frames these evolving creatures move and with each motion they make sounds created with the items of garbage. These interact with found urban sound-scapes: techno-beats, the buzzing of a tattoo-machine, street organ music, demonstration-chants, construction noise, hammering of cobblestones. An acoustic image of Berlin is portrayed. Fantastic fauna, humanoid mysteries, unknown new species are all performing their own characteristic ballet. There are no limitations to fantasy. As one creature comes to the end of its performance another continues in the next hideout, until a pan to the sky leaves Berlin behind us. “Berlin Recyclers” is the third “Recycler” film, following “Paris Recyclers” (© 2011) and “Buenos Aires Recyclers” (© 2011).

Die Straßen Berlins sind die Orte, welche die Animationskünstlerin Nikki Schuster nach Müll absucht. Kleine Wegwerfstücke, achtlos fallen gelassen, ohne sich darüber Gedanken zu machen. Aus ihnen formt sie eine neue Welt absonderlich bewegter, lebendig werdender Figuren. Kurz werden ausgesuchte Straßen und urbane Nischen vorgestellt, Bild für Bild mit rasanten Schwenks zusammenmontiert, und dann auf ein winziges Detail einer Mauer, einer Steckdose, eines Baucontainers oder Graffitis hineingezoomt. Dort beginnt Leben, wächst etwas heran, verformt sich und gibt Töne von sich: kleine Müllkreaturen. Schuhsohlen, Metallstückchen, Cups von Spraydosen oder Einweg-Zahnreiniger - scheinbar jeder Abfall wird nützlich. In computeranimierten Einzelbildern bewegen die sich entwickelnden Kreaturen und erzeugen mit jeder Bewegung spezifische Geräusche, kreiert mit dem Abfall selbst. Dazu mischen sich gefundene, urbane Tonaufnahmen: Technobeats, Sounds einer Tätowiermaschine, Drehorgelmusik, Demonstrations-Slogans, Baulärm, Hämmern von Pflastersteinen. Ein Hörbild Berlins wird portraitiert. Fantastisches Getier, humanoide Rätsel, unbekannte neue Spezies, die ihr eigenwilliges Ballett aufführen. Der Fantasie scheinen kaum Grenzen gesetzt. Kaum ist eine Kreatur am Ende ihrer Performance, beginnt das Treiben in der nächsten Nische, bis der Schwenk zum Himmel Berlin hinter uns lässt. „Berlin Recyclers“ ist der dritte „Recyclers“ Film nach „Paris Recyclers“ (© 2011) und „Buenos Aires Recyclers““ (© 2011).
