Jade McIntyre discovers a medal in amongst her great-grandfather’s war memorabilia. Her brother Sam is curious and asks his mum some questions about some of the photos in the box. One of the photos is of a Japanese soldier and his family - a photo with an untold story.
Separated from his unit during a WWII battle in New Guinea, Australian soldier Mick Flannigan attempts to find his way back to safety.
Exhausted and out of ammunition, Japanese soldier Masashi Kimura is the only survivor in a destroyed Japanese camp.
When Flannigan stumbles into the ruins of Kimura’s camps, the enemies are faced with a brutal struggle for survival. Flannigan gains the advantage and is about to shoot Kimura when he notices his enemy is focused on trying to retrieve something from the dirt. Pushing Kimura back, Flannigan picks up a photo of a family that reminds him very much of his own.
Flannigan hands the photo back to his enemy and tries to ask about the Japanese soldier’s family. In the few minutes that follow, the two soldiers attempt to communicate about themselves and their families – until the war forces it’s way back into their lives and reactions force the hand of fate.
