Debut

Seng is, in most ways, a boy – except for the fact that he is 33 years old. A happy-go-lucky bachelor, he is content with spending his days at his father’s famous, albeit small, restaurant, helping to take orders and wash dishes. Comic books and Bruce Lee films always take precedence over learning to cook from his father, Huat. Due to his innocence and general goodness of heart, there is little that Seng can be faulted for, except, most probably, a lack of ambition. In the space of a day, however, Seng’s life is turned around when Huat, himself already sixty, falls sick. Diagnosed – by a traditional Chinese sinseh, no less – with disorders of the spleen and stomach, Huat is ordered to stay away from any work or strain indefinitely. Not bearing to agitate his father, Seng has no choice but to plunge himself headfirst into the world of cooking – not an easy task for someone who doesn’t know the next thing about cooking, and who is severely allergic to shellfish. This is because the Soon Huat Restaurant is famous for only one dish – its crab bee hoon. The story charts Seng’s journey, following him as he embarks on a spectrum of both serious and lighthearted moments.
