Lillie lives alone, Her house echoes with the sounds that silence brings.
Her humdrum existence and lack of visitors means she faces a daily struggle to keep loneliness at bay. With age her memories have increased in potency. Small things, like sounds, smells and tastes bring happy, emotive parts of her past flooding into her present and her youth re-enfolds right before her eyes. A simple gramophone record brings to life the excitement and joy she felt the first time she danced with her husband to be, at an impromptu wartime party.
She keeps herself occupied re-experiencing these treasured times and finds the love, emotion and friendship that is missing from her life now. This way of living keeps her happy, as these memories of the past enliven her present and reinforces her belief that loneliness is just a state of mind.
