This is a sound / sculpture installation. The piece a voice actress' talking in an automated fashion from a speaker set inside a pile of hay bales. The script is directed at undermining notions of the romanticism surrounding pre-industrial society. It is based mostly on post Marxist ideas concerning the technological transformation of nature and the subsequent rationalization of domination that occurs in this process. The content of the emotionally charged script, is in stark contrast to the automated form of the voice. There is a feeling that the voice is attempting to justify itself by attacking Marxist ideology and other ideas concerning our contemporary relationship with nature. The vulnerability is further expose due to the voice being literally embedded in the hay bales. The large authoritarian presence of the hay also smells of the countryside or the farm which consumes the argument as it unfolds. We are left with a dichotomy between the connotations of the hay bales and the argument put forward by the automated voice, both are authoritarian playing of one another to gain ground in the viewers mind. The work also creates a tension between the artist and viewer as the artist work is literally arguing with itself creating a humorous display of self doubt.
