Move Out Clean is a short drama tinged with the surreal, in which we witness Jake’s discovery of the meaning of personal responsibility. Jake is a lost artist, alone in his task of the “move out clean” of the home he shared with Laura, who’s now his ex-girlfriend. As he tries to wash away the painful reminders of his broken relationship contained in the apartment’s walls and crevices, Jake is at first haunted, and later consumed, by bad memories and even harsher fantasies. Against his will, he begins to uncover a less than perfect version of himself under years of grime as the lines between reality and the imagined begin to blur. He buckles under the weight of grief and embarrassment, careening himself toward a destructive – and ultimately redemptive – moment of self-realization. Move Out Clean addresses the point of collision between our dual natures: what the Greeks called our “higher” and “lower” selves. In the tradition of great drama, it pits man against himself, casting Jake as both the protagonist and the antagonist as his id and super-ego battle in a necessary coming-of-age. In this sense, Move Out Clean is a representation of the most fundamental and profound struggles within every person. This is a film about personal responsibility beyond its impact in human relations; this is a story about one’s responsibility to one’s self and the destruction obliviousness can cause: Jake’s inability to function in a world of responsible adults causes the disintegration of his relationship. But this is also a story of the painful (and, we hope, glorious) rising-from-the-ashes, which morphs Jake’s complete reversal into recognition; from childishness into manhood.
