In Divine Interest is an initiative of Roaming Design, an independent design company based in India. This project is a labor of love that aims to bring Indian aesthetics into animation films. India has a rich history of diverse performing and creative arts that have developed a unique identity and grammar for themselves over centuries. Indian films borrow some of their aesthetics from these very art-forms be it the song and dance sequences to even its theatrical structure. In spite of this, Roaming Design feels that Indian animation has much more scope of adapting these age-old aesthetics to the screen and also to the contemporary life of modern India. This first set of six films have been conceptualized to revolve around the mythologies of the Hindu festival of Diwali. The stories and animation have been tweaked to make it more contemporary and issue-based. These films delve into the current practices centered around Diwali and make a comment on how misinformed they are. The characters are heroes, heroines and villains from the mythologies that gave birth to this festival. They remind the audience of the root philosophies behind the celebration of Diwali and clear some misnomers while spreading positive messages. The characters' look is inspired from Channapatna toys, idols of Lord Jagannath and classical theatrical treatise Natyashastra. Their movement is inspired from the south-Indian performing art of Kathakali. The music combines the flavors of the northern and southern classical styles with an animated twist. In the future, the In Divine Interest project aims to grow into a movement that creates truly Indian animation. In form, style, sound, movement, in short; Indian in every way. This is the heart and soul of the project: an aesthetic design innovation. We plan to do extensive research and document every step of the way. All our work has been created using free and open-source software. We consider this project the first of its kind in India.
